Barcelona–El Prat: Groundforce ground-handling indefinite strike from 4 August 2026

The Groundforce ground-handling strike at Barcelona-El Prat has passed the one-month mark with no end in sight. Around 1,175 workers are involved, there have been no talks between the CGT and management since 24 July, and none are scheduled. Over the last weekend of August the airport handled its busiest return-travel period of the year, more than 4,400 flights in three days, under the strike, and the Transport Ministry's minimum-services order remains in force. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and thousands of bags delayed since 4 August. Passengers flying with airlines handled by Groundforce should keep checking their flight status, allow extra time and travel with hand luggage where possible.

The indefinite Groundforce ground-handling strike at Barcelona-El Prat has entered its fourth week with no end in sight. Talks remain frozen: management and the CGT have not met since 24 July, and no new negotiations are scheduled. Around 270 flights have been cancelled and more than 6,000 bags delayed or left unclaimed since the strike began on 4 August. Minimum services set by Spain's Transport Ministry (35-80% of flights depending on the route) have been extended to run through September, and travel-industry observers warn the strike itself could also continue into September, so passengers with upcoming trips should not assume it will be over by their travel date. Flights handled by Groundforce at Barcelona - including Air Europa, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, ITA Airways, United and Finnair - remain the ones affected. Checking your flight status before travelling and flying with hand luggage only remain advisable.

The strike has entered its third week with no agreement, and negotiations remain stalled — CGT says management has not met the union since 24 July, before the walkout began.

Workers' figures reported by La Vanguardia put the running total at 150 to 170 cancelled flights and around 3,000 bags stranded at the airport, with some baggage-claim waits exceeding five hours. Eighteen flights were cancelled on 13 August alone, with the Lufthansa Group among the worst affected. Lufthansa is reported to have sent a senior executive to Barcelona to help break the deadlock, so far without result.

Minimum services set by Spain's Ministry of Transport, ranging from 35 to 80 per cent depending on the route, continue to contain the wider impact. Around 11,600 flight movements by Groundforce's client airlines are scheduled through September if the dispute is not settled.

In recent days, more than 50 flights have been cancelled and thousands of bags delayed, with around 3,000 suitcases left on the ground on 13 August. The union and Groundforce have not announced an agreement; minimum services set by the Transport Ministry remain in force.

The strike is now in its tenth day and is still going, with no negotiations under way.

As of 11 August, the union's running total was about 150 flights cancelled since the walkout began on 4 August, 2,000–2,500 bags left unloaded at the airport, and around 20 flights a day delayed by roughly 90 minutes. Ground services are affected for about 20 airlines, including Qatar Airways, Air France, Air Europa and Lufthansa.

The union says the company has not yet opened negotiations, and no end to the action is expected in the coming days. It has also complained that minimum services are not being respected.

Passengers flying with a Groundforce-handled airline from Barcelona–El Prat should check their flight with the airline before travelling, allow extra time at the airport, and avoid checking baggage where possible.

Note: separate delays and cancellations at El Prat on 13 August were caused by an electrical fault in the control tower, not by this strike.

The strike is continuing for a seventh day, with no agreement in sight.
